Students will develop their critical thinking skills through logic puzzles, strategy games, escape
rooms, and lots more fun, hands-on activities. Throughout the year, we will also use the stories
and activities in “The Fallacy Detective” to learn to recognize common errors in reasoning and
help students be stronger, clearer thinkers. **This class will have little or no homework.**

Ancient History - Instructor: Ms. Dawn:
We will explore the Ancient Worlds of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Following the
dramatic history of the world’s first civilizations, we will explore the lives of the first farmers in
the Middle East and the rise of the mighty Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman
empires. Students will learn about what life was like in the ancient world, including their beliefs,
cultures, architecture, and art. This class will cover a wide range of topics such as how writing
was first developed, why Julius Caesar was murdered, the story of the Trojain Horse, and how a
woman became an Egyptian pharaoh. **This class will have homework.**

Ancient Science - Instructor: Ms. Jen:
This class will supplement and extend students’ history class by focusing on the scientific discoveries and state of scientific thought in the civilizations they’re studying in Ancient History. The class will be hands-on and interactive, with activities such as Stone Age food tool use, Mesopotamian irrigation, Egyptian mummification, Greek optics, Roman roads, and more!

A Choice Between Zines (Instructor: Ms. Jen) and Current Events (Instructor: Ms. Dawn):
Zines! Class: A zine is a small-circulation, self-published, and intensely focused magaZINE. Zines have been used for decades to share ideas and celebrate interests in niche and under-represented communities. Zines can have art, prose, poetry, reporting, or anything else that fits on a page! In this class, students will have the opportunity to create several zines with different focuses over the course of the year – some of them individually made, some of them group projects, and some of them that the whole class contributes to.

Current Events Discussion Class: This class is a discussion based class and a safe space for students to learn, discuss, and understand more about the way that current events impact every level and many aspects of our lives. Students will be able to ask questions and talk about views, ideas, and solutions to the many issues that make up our current events in moderated conversations framed by the Question of the Week or Hot Topics submitted by the teacher and the students alike. We will delve into many issues but may not always agree on the best solutions to these issues - which is fine! **This class will have some homework due to the need to research new topics each week that the students are interested in discussing.**

There will be two 30 minute snack/lunch/recess breaks during the day. (PLEASE NOTE: WE ARE A NUT FREE FACILITY!)
